The following are some of the most common dental emergencies requiring prompt care:

  • Severe toothache or dental pain
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Swelling in the mouth or jaw
  • Injury to the lips, tongue, or gums
  • Infection or an abscessed tooth
  • Broken denture or dental appliance

Note: If your emergency is life-threatening, please dial 911 or head for the nearest hospital emergency room.

Care Tips for Common Dental Emergencies

If you experience a dental emergency, contact Compass Dental to schedule your same-day visit. Meanwhile, the following are general care tips to manage your condition before heading for your appointment:

Toothache: Any severe or sudden tooth pain requires immediate care. However, you may want to floss to ensure that there's nothing stuck between two teeth that could be causing your pain. If the pain persists, rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain medication for relief before being seen by our emergency dentist.

Broken or Chipped Tooth: Rinse gently with warm water and use cold compresses to help relieve any pain or discomfort. Place any pieces of the tooth in a container of milk and bring them to your emergency appointment.

Knocked-Out Tooth: A knocked-out tooth that's treated soon after injury has the best chance of being saved. After calling our office, pick up the tooth by its crown, rinse it with clean water, and gently place it back in its socket. If that's not possible, carry the tooth in a small container of milk before heading to your emergency appointment.

Facial Swelling: Apply cold compresses to your face to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief medication to ease any discomfort. If the swelling is severe, don't wait—head to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Soft Tissue Injury: If you injure your cheeks, lips, or tongue, rinse with lukewarm water to clean the affected area and apply gentle pressure to help stop any bleeding. If you cannot control the bleeding, head to your nearest emergency room for prompt care.

Lost Filling or Crown: Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on sticky or hard foods. Over-the-counter dental cement or sugar-free gum can help protect the affected tooth until our team at Compass Dental can see you.

Disclaimer: The above are general care tips and should not be considered a substitute for professional treatment. If you experience a dental emergency, it's essential to seek prompt attention from a dental professional.
